My name is Amber Reynolds. There are three things you should know about me:
1. I’m in a coma.
2. My husband doesn’t love me anymore.
3. Sometimes I lie.
Amber wakes up in a hospital. She can’t move. She can’t speak. She can’t open her eyes. She can hear everyone around her, but they have no idea. Amber doesn’t remember what happened, but she has a suspicion her husband had something to do with it. Alternating between her paralysed present, the week before her accident, and a series of childhood diaries from twenty years ago, this brilliant psychological thriller asks: Is something really a lie if you believe it’s the truth?

There are two possibilities. I have either lost half my brain cells and turned stupid overnight (statistically speaking highly unlikely) or this bloody thing just made no sense whatsoever. It wouldn’t be the first time an author throws in just one too many plot twist for no other reason to be extra, but it doesn’t make it better.

From the first page I was hooked. I was ready to dish out five hearts because it was just that good. Then the last few chapters happened. I was dumbfounded. Confused. Mind boggled. I even spent some time on the Goodreads Q&A forum trying to untangle just what the shit happened at the end. No luck.confused

It was a mess, guys, I’m telling you.

The story started out with Amber in a sort of coma that just sounded all sorts of weird. She was aware of people around her, could hear them talk, but didn’t have a way to communicate, so surely something else is wrong with her, right? She had no memory of how she ended up in this unfortunate situation, but soon she started getting worried that her husband was somehow responsible for it. So, there you have it. Amber is afraid of her husband, Paul, who is in turn doesn’t trust his wife’s sister, while Amber herself is no innocent wallflower either as we soon learn.

The plot unfolded through three timelines. Presently in the hospital, from a few weeks before her misfortune and via diary entries from 1992. The whole thing was really cleverly pieced together and there was a shocking revelation around every corner, and the diary entries were chilling enough to creep me out. Add to it the fantastic narrator, and just thinking about it gives me the shivers.

Without killing it for you, you need to be aware that if you like a neat and satisfying ending, or just in fact one that makes sense, this book is not for you. Not only its ending is not neatly tied up, but there are just some things that I would even consider a plot hole. Like how a certain thing holds a meaning to a certain person, but nobody else would know what to make of it and yet it is used for a shocking conclusion. Conclusion for what though is not clear. Or how someone just makes an offhand references to something that was not mentioned before and neither is elaborated on later on so you are just left there hanging. Mind you some people actually enjoyed this, so really it is up to you.

You have been warned.

My name is Norrie. There are three things you should know about me:
1. I’m not in a coma, but bloody close to it.
2. I really liked Alice Feeney’s book.
3. Sometimes I lie.

  1. Well, I disliked Feeney’s latest book I Know Who You Are with all my heart, so I’d be lying if I said I didn’t take any satisfaction from your review, 😂. I’ll never touch a Feeney book ever in my life. If you didn’t like this, I wouldn’t recommend you to pick up that one because the plot completely was ridiculous and disgusting. Nothing made sense. I don’t think her writing is anything special either. Great twist at the end to your review also. Here’s to better books Norrie!

    1. You know, i’m actually relieved it wasn’t just me. I often think my mind wanders when i read, and like you, tried to re-read the end. Seeing all the confused people on goodreads was a good sign too that i’m not alone 😀

    1. I think it’s one of those you need to see for yourself maybe?
I think lot of people are able to forgive a bad/weird ending if they liked the majority of the book.
I personally don’t like sort of unfinished stuff, or a twist that is not logical or seems like an afterthought. 🙂

  2. Love your start here, WTF did I just read. I wasn’t going to read book reviews today but you got me. I read the blurb and was like oh cool…but you helped me, thank you. I don’t like shitty endings, and I don’t want to read a book with a shitty ending. Did you see the movie Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri? Yeah that ending made me mad after enjoying myself and my time watching the movie. I will just get mad reading a book like this and rant in a bad review about why they needed more beta readers at least. Thank you! 😉

    1. Haha, i feel you! I was pretty ranty after i finished this one 😀
Haven’t seen Three Billboards, but now i’m not even sure i want to. Thank you for the warning! 🙂

      1. Hope I didn’t spoil the movie for you. 😉 I know the ranty thing all too much. Sometimes after I rant I think hmmm…I wonder if I should just keep a lot of that to myself. I do get all worked up about discussing what does and doesn’t work.

  3. When this came out, she had another book listed as coming soon called “Sometimes I Kill,” which now has a different title. We all assumed THAT ending was going to have a follow up with the next book! But it totally didn’t. The book was different entirely. I’m ok with an open ending. I don’t mind making stuff up. 😂 But it would be nice to know more. Lovely, entertaining review, Norrie!

    1. Thank you 😀
Open ending i think i can put up with. But i think a plot twist should still be reasonable and not just totally random. Which i felt this was because no matter how i search in the book, i can’t find its relevance to anything :/

  4. Oh boy… ONLY TWO STARS! That’s saying something from you. This must have really fucked up at the end. But I know what you mean. You get sucked into a book that, for the most part, is a riveting read and then, suddenly, the author has a brain fart and loses the plot altogether. Oh, best part of your review – the footnote. LMAO!

  5. I´m having troubles breathing after that last line of yours. HAHAHAHA. OMG. I´m done. Was about to say what a shame it is that the book started out good then ended up being a dump. Now I just can´t. HAHAHAHA. So fitting.

  6. Oh nooo, I really hate a confusing ending! I have also read books thinking the whole way through “wow, this is a 5 out of 5” but then, the ending upsets me & I’ve given it a 1 lol.

This one sounds sooo interesting but I will not be picking it up. Thanks for the warning, Norrie!!

  7. Sometimes a mindboggling book that makes you want to discuss/look up the ending with other people is a good book. Sometimes, it’s just a badly written one because it’s too confusing. Thanks for such an interesting review 😉
