Monthly Catch Up #5 – May 2019

Hey, guys! How you doing?

May, my favourite month has passed, and we are inching closer and closer to summer.

This month I turned 35 and I must say it’s weird, because I don’t feel older (or wiser) than 28. As I’m just getting back into my gym routine, I skipped the cheesecake this year (yeah, I know, sacrilege), but my bestie took me out for dinner to my favourite neighbourhood steak place. I must say their burgers are a hit and miss, and this time I got a dry sandpaper one, but at least the cocktails were nice.

A few weeks ago I had my first blogger meeting as well. I met Vera @Unfiltered Tales for a coffee. She’s awesome! We had such a fun time, and talking to her was like talking to someone I’ve known for ages. She also gave me some tips on where to find petite coats, which was truly a life saver. There’s this new trend apparently: if you are small, you either freeze to death, or look like you are wearing potato sacks and have no hands, ‘cuz there ain’t no coat for you in most shops.

Being petite really sucks sometimes. Especially when I’m trying to look like an actual grown up, and not a twelve year old playing dress up with her mum’s clothes. I’m 5’2″, so can’t even say I’m that tiny, but apparently clothing manufacturers haven’t caught on this fact yet. Calf length pants, you say? Ankle grazers, more likely!

We had two bank holidays in May, and I took some time off for my birthday as well, so all in all it was not a bad month at all. I guess I could have easily read more, but all those CSI episodes ain’t gonna watch themselves!

I also finished watching Dead To Me on Netflix. DeadToMeIt’s fuckin’ brilliant! I’m absolutely in love with Judy’s outfits. I also have a bit of 70’s/retro vibe going on lately, so it was not only a dark and twisty story, but a cool fashion inspo.

I finally read Stillhouse Lake! I’ve been saying since forever that I will, and took me until now to actually do it. All I can say is, if you haven’t read it yet, and love a good thriller, check it out!

How close is too close?

Connie and Ness met in the park while their children played. As they talked, they realised they were neighbours. Perhaps it was only natural that they and their families would become entirely inseparable.

But when Ness’s marriage ends in a bitter divorce, she is suddenly at Connie’s house all the time. Connie doesn’t have a moment to herself, no time alone with her husband, not a second to chat to her kids.

It’s all too much. Something has to give.

Connie has woken up in a psychiatric hospital. They say she committed a terrible crime but she says she can’t remember a thing.

I’m going to Tenerife in two weeks! Can’t wait. Have you been? I keep looking at the weather forecast and it seems to we will have a constant 24C every day. I’m not sure what to think about that. Is that beach weather there?

My physio seems to be onto something. We established that my back is recovering nicely and my muscles work properly. She was absolutely baffled by the fact that I wake up every day at exactly 4 am, being in pain. So now I’m  following her advice and sleep in a quasi pillow fort to prevent me from moving. Seems to work! So there will further trials, haha.

I look forward to seeing what you guys are up to!

  1. Can’t wait to watch Dead To Me now! It’s on my list (obvs!) but I’m still not through Riverdale, all those pesky books keep getting in the way 😉 I’m 5’4″ btw but I know what you mean. Cute little skirt a little above the knee? Hellooo skirt that is neither long nor short and looks like I’m wearing my grandma’s clothes 🙄

    1. Oh yes, i got that look!
My other fave is “grandma’s lampshade”… :/ when that thing is meant to be a short dress but is also somehow so wide would fit me twice… 😀

  2. I am 5’2″ too! But not 35 anymore ….LOL Happy birthday Norrie and I see you have great holiday ahead!

  3. Happy birthday month! I hope you had awesome fun but it sounds like you did! Oooh snap on the height thing! I’m also 5’2″ (and a half, that half is important) and I agree with you! The amount of dresses and skirts that are supposed to be ‘just below knee’ end up swinging around my calves and I end up looking like a nana! Part of me has given up caring and so I’m just trying to own the nana skirt and lengths that aren’t weird on someone 6 inches taller!

  4. What a nice wrap-up. 🙂 Happy birthday by the way, may you have many more. That makes us Gemini sisters. 😀

Sorry to hear about your height troubles. I’m only a couple inches taller than you but I think here in the states I’ve had an easier time finding smaller coats. I really can’t stand that it is apparently impossible to get workout clothes that aren’t tight. For now I’m sticking to working out in the living room. 😉

I missed some of your lists so I’ll have to go back and check them out! 24 C is about 75 F for me which is a fabulous temperature in my opinion and I am NOT a fan of hot weather, so 75 is a nice balance. Not sure what that is you’re going to but hope you have a safe and lovely time.

I also read The Dazzling Heights this month and.. well I love this kind of drama haha I can’t wait to read the last book in the series! 🙂
I hope you will have a beautiful June 🙂

  6. Wow, you packed a lot in the month of May, what with trips here and there, meeting Vera (which I’d love to do, we’ve skyped, and yes, she’s awesome). And damn if you didn’t read a ton more than me this month. I have no idea what’s happened to my reading streak? I guess it streaked elsewhere. And yeah, I have a number of those titles on my wish list too. Including Stillhouse Lake.

Oh, and if I didn’t say so before Hippo Burpday on hitting 35, which is a magical number. And if you want clothes for the petite, come here, we have boutiques that do, small, medium, tall and fat! I love it here! 😉

  7. Happy belated Birthday! 😀
I feel you about getting older, to me, I don’t feel any older than I did at 18… maybe a little more mature, but otherwise I’m like I don’t feel like I’m in my mid-twenties 😝

I completely understand the whole small people clothing! I’m 5’1 and I just refer to capris as ‘short pants’ because all those tall people out there call them capris, to me they are just regular pants because my legs are so short!
You read a lot of books, that’s exciting! 😀 Here’s to another brilliant month! 😀

  8. Happy belated birthday, Norrie!
I get what you mean about not feeling older. I can’t believe that I will also be 35 in a month, I used to think of mid-thirties as such a different time where I will be way wiser haha and probably be a totally different person. I am wiser I guess but not in the Sensei manner that I expected 😀

I have to watch Dead to Me. it looks so good.

Have a fab month of June and enjoy the trip!

  9. Hi Norrie, I liked your blog and have been watching dead to me with my 15-year-old daughter. Thanks for the books talk lol. I will be checking some of these out. I’m 36 so I understand about those ’30s lol.

  10. Happy belated birthday!! You know, from all your insta pics, I honestly thought you were in your 20’s. 😀 And oooh you met Vera!! That’s awesome to hear (and I’m also slightly jealous haha). If I had all the money in the world I would totally organize a book blogger convention and pay for everyone’s tickets so I could meet you all in person. 😀

    1. Awww… i’m melting ❤ Thank you 🙂

An international blogger meeting would be amazing! Imagine a bunch of bookworms descending onto an exotic island to take over all the sun beds and read together! ❤ 😀

  11. Happy belated birthday, and welcome to the 35 club! I still don’t feel my age, I feel like I am no different to 26-28 year old me in a lot of ways. I also don’t have my life together so. LOL

How fun you got to meet Vera!!! I am looking forward to your thoughts on Evelyn Hardcastle!
I hope you have a great time in Tenerife, my friend lives there and talks about how lovely it is nonstop.

  12. Hi Norrie! So happy to hear you had a nice time with your friend on your birthday (despite the sandpaper burger) & how fun that you got to meet up with a blogger. 🙂 I’m 5’1″ so I totally get your clothing struggle!!

I just recently cancelled Netflix but I’m regretting it now because I didn’t watch Dead to Me & keep getting recommended it. 😭

I’m curious to read your review on Evelyn Hardcastle if you wrote one! I’ve heard good things about it!

Hope you had the best time in Tenerife & that the weather was nice!! I’m glad the pillow has been helping you. ♡ Sounds terrible waking up at exactly 4 am everyday!

  14. ( I made notes for this. Lol. ) What a month! First off- Happy belated birthday! It seems like everything is weird when you´re over 30. Body and mind aren´t always on the same page, you start forgetting shit, you get all sorts of pain in the oddest places, and have issues you never thought existed… the list is endless. Bah, being over 30 can be exhausting )
The fact that you skipped the cheesecake is unforgivable. HOW COULD YOU?! I think the hit and miss burger issue is a global thing. YAY on the blogger meet-up :-)! I´m so happy you had a wonderful time. I love meeting bloggers and authors.
Being petite: Okay. This is something we have in common. I´m 5´2, too. I´m sharing clothes with my 12-year-old. The other day I came home with a few shirts and some cool 80´s retro sweat shorts- She walked in, grabbed the clothes and thanked me. I had tears in my eyes because 1) I struggle with clothes shopping due to weird sizes, etc 2) In what universe is this okay? Jeans- a fucking pain in the ass to shop for. Coats – I´ve been using the same one for the last 8 years because the trend here is to freeze your damn kidneys in the winter. Dresses – Look plain odd. It´s a real struggle.
CSI is still running?! Or are you just watching the reruns? Dead To Me = AWESOME!! I´m a huge fan of Christina Applegate.
You know, I´m having an envy moment looking at your book list. * hangs head in shame *
How was Tenerife? I hope you had great weather and a wonderful time 🙂
