The countdown has began! Summer on the Northern hemisphere will officially begin on 21st June. I don’t know if we’ll get lucky with the weather here in the UK, but it never hurts to be prepared. You know, just in case we can finally ditch the jacket and maybe we get a chance to sit in an outdoor cafe somewhere, chilling and reading.
Some books just scream summer. There’s something about the story, like an exotic setting, or perhaps the cover emanates some holiday vibes that can instantly set the mood for the season.
These five books have been sitting on my various lists for ages, and whenever I lay eyes on them, I get the summer tingles. Considering I haven’t read them yet, I could be completely wrong.
Summerland by Elin Hilderbrand
The title literally has “summer” in it! There’s a couple on a sandy beach… I don’t think we can get more summery than this!
The Unexpected Everything by Morgan Matson
The girl on the cover is wearing tiny shorts, and she seems to be off to having an ice cream. How she will eat it with all those dogs tugging on her arm is questionable, but I just feel like stepping into this picture and help her out. With her ice cream, of course.
The Swimming Pool by Louise Candlish
Do you often hang out in outdoor swimming pools during winter? Well, fine, maybe you do. I did that in -10C and it was actually quite cool, pun intended, but swimming pools always remind me of summer and being on holiday.
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
When I still lived in my hometown, I used to go canoeing and kayaking on the river near our house quite often during the summer. The cover of this book is just making me all kinds of nostalgic. I know I could take up the habit again, even in London, but sitting on the bus for over half an hour just to get to the place where I can rent a canoe is really just killing the all the fun.
Nine Perfect Strangers by Liane Moriarty
The setting is a luxury resort cut off from the outside world. That’s certainly the sort of place I’d love to visit during the summer!
What about you guys? Do you have any specific books that put you in a summer mood?
Top 5 Tuesday is hosted by Shanah @Bionic Bookworm.
First my post is scheduled in a few hours but I did select The Unexpected Everything without cheating on you! Then Where The Crawdads Sing is not summery yet it is fantastic. Too deep I think for being called a summer read but…you’ll see Norrie Lol

Nine Perfect Strangers and The Swimming Pool (those two books glued together make a cool movie title, haha) are on my summer list! I can’t stand the summer heat, so I’d be happy to send you some Bordeaux sun!

Oh, someone needs to make that movie! 😀
I could totes do with some sun 😀 It’s back to cold and rainy here again

I love the sound of all these books. Books with back settings usually put me in the mood for summer. These 5 sound so different but well suited for the season.

Nice list! I can definitely see how these books make you think of summer. I love all the cute dogs on the cover of The Unexpected Everything. ^_^
I wasn’t able to participate in last month’s reading for my book club, but the selected book was actually Where the Crawdads Sing, so if you end up reading it this summer I really look forward to seeing what you thought of it! 🙂 I heard it takes a bit to get going, but is well-written overall. 🙂

I hope you get to read it too, even if you missed it when the book club people read it 🙂

Hahah I thought you were referring to Hannu Rajaniemi’s Summerland for a second, which unfortunately wouldn’t be the greatest summer read, but still a pretty cool book to check out! 😛 Awesome list!

I’m instantly drawn to The Unexpected Everything because of the doggos, but all of these look great! And I would LOVE to live beside a river. It’s only like a 20 minute drive to the ocean, but it’s still kind of a hassle strapping my kayak on the car and unstrapping it and then strapping it again. Still fun though! 😀

Omg, you actually have a kayak? That’s awesome! ❤
But yea, the hassle… i totes understand that.

I won it at my highschool senior prom raffle 😂 I mean, it’s not the *best* kayak in the world, but it floats and goes forward at a moderate pace so it’s good enough for me 😀

I ended up reading it not so long ago. I was quite surprised… wasn’t like all the other Moriarty books. Liked it, but not like “wow”.
