Monthly Catch Up #4 – April 2019

How’s it going, guys?

I have returned from the Land of the Huns, and I must say, my holiday went better than expected. The weather ended up being somewhat shitty though, and I came to the realization that having a weather app that gets the forecast right is rather like a unicorn. You see, when I’m in London, I can rely on the thing. If it say it will rain at 1 pm, you bet it will start raining then. The weather in Hungary however seems to be more of a rebel with a fuck-you-guys attitude, because nothing the forecast showed was even remotely similar to what was actually happening.

The family visit was quite all right. I mean, I was rolling my eyes on the inside, but at least it wasn’t visible. I realized by now that while my therapist is right, and talking about how we feel in certain situations is indeed a good strategy in general, but there are situations when it’s just simply not worth getting into it. So you know, just smile and nod…

It was fun to see my friends too after three years. #hearthands

While there is a serious lack of things to do in my tiny town, we did take walks by the river, and also had the best steak in quite a while. Seriously though… If you guys ever find yourself in Baja, in the south of Hungary, you need to check out Borbistro. 20190505_111032.jpg

I’m still wondering where I know the waiter from, which, according to my other half, just proves that my hometown is basically a village. Running into people I know every five minutes did not help my case when I insisted that in fact, strictly speaking, it is a city.

We only ended up spending two days in Budapest. I haven’t been there for seven years, and I must say, it’s way better than it used to be.

read-april

I read an eclectic selection of books in April. Some surprisingly good, some quite meh.

Dead Stop was seriously awesome, and has the best dog character ever, while Never Let Me Go was kind of a depressing sort of nonsense I ended up reading after a colleague of mine told me he couldn’t get past the first chapter, and the book is still under his bed where he threw it months ago.

Not That I Could Tell by Jessica Strawser β™₯β™₯β™₯β™₯
A bit like Desperate Housewives.

Donuts have never been so bad!

Bird Box by Josh Malerman β™₯β™₯β™₯β™₯
A good freak out!

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman β™₯β™₯β™₯β™₯
Quirky!

silentwifeThe Silent Wife by Kerry Fisher

Lara’s life looks perfect on the surface. Gorgeous doting husband Massimo, sweet little son Sandro and the perfect home. Lara knows something about Massimo. Something she can’t tell anyone else or everything Massimo has worked so hard for will be destroyed: his job, their reputation, their son. This secret is keeping Lara a prisoner in her marriage.

Maggie is married to Massimo’s brother Nico and lives with him and her troubled step-daughter. She knows all of Nico’s darkest secrets – or so she thinks. Then one day she discovers a letter in the attic which reveals a shocking secret about Nico’s first wife Caitlin. Will Maggie set the record straight or keep silent to protect those she loves?

For a family held together by lies, the truth will come at a devastating price.

As I did in the past couple of months, I think I will limit the number of posts to around two a week. It wasn’t actually a conscious decision, it just happened, but seemed to work just fine with my schedule and all the other things I wanted to spend my time on.

I’m doing a serious CSI marathon, and I’m really into it. I used to watch it on telly back in the day, but I think I must have missed some episodes even then, so it’s nice to see them in order. I’m currently on the third season.csi-s3

I look forward to seeing what you guys are up to!

  1. I didn’t know you were from Hungary Norrie! Si when I saw your bookstagram with a book in Hungarian I was wondering if you knew the language LOL. Happy to know your holiday went well. Now about Daisy Jones, have you reviewed it? I know everyone is shouting praise about Evelyne Hugo and Daisy Jones but …the genre just does not seem to appeal to me so I m curious to read your thoughts!

    1. Haha πŸ˜€
BTW, once i bought a copy of Adrian Mole book #1 in spanish. I don’t speak spanish, but i figured i will learn one day, so just in case… πŸ˜€

Daisy Jones was pretty interesting. Haven’t reviewed it yet tho. I did the audio book, and the actors were really good. Not sure what genre that book is supposed to be, it kinda had a story, but was told as an interview which made it really cool.

This is book #2 in a series, and book #1 is called Blood on the Tracks.

    1. Oh, nice, i hope you manage to visit πŸ™‚
One tip i can give, is to find a hotel near the Lanc Hid (Chain Bridge) – it’s really close to a lot of interesting stuff. As in walking distance ❀ πŸ™‚

  3. Ooh you should come visit Cape Town. It’s been said that we have four seasons in one day. This week it’s been a humid 35 degrees and today it’s 20 and chilly. FYI it’s winter in South Africa …

Happy to hear I’m not the only one who didn’t think Never let me go didn’t live up to the hype. But I suspect we have slightly similar taste in books 😊 Yay for CSI as well. Used to watch it on TV way back.

Your CSI binge sounds like my ER binge haha!

  6. Hungary’s weather is a lot like Kenya’s. Whatever the app says or even the meteorological department, the opposite usually happens. Sometimes it feels like nature just wants to embarrass the met dept and make them seem incompetent: D Glad your holiday went better than expected and welcome back ❀
So many interesting titles on your post. I’m dying to read The Passengers. I read The Silent Wife a while ago, I hope you are enjoying it so far. Have a fab month of May ❀

You read some great titles there, I look forward to your reviews!

  9. It’s great to hear that you had a nice trip, Norrie! Damn, you’re really making me want to go on vacation now! Haha! I’m glad that you ended up being pleasantly surprised by a few of your reads this month! I’ve decided to *try* to post twice a week as well, and so far I have most of these posts scheduled for May? Fingers crossed I’ll be able to stick to this schedule! lol. Have a great May, love! ❀

  10. Super happy for you that your trip went okay, and that you enjoyed most of it, weather aside! And damn if that river walk didn’t look really inviting. I think I’d like that. Now I can’t wait for my holidays in July! πŸ˜€

      1. We’re actually staying IN Quebec, the province, and doing trips out and about. Like ComicCon in Montreal to see Captain Kirk (William Shatner) and the Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) from Once Upon A Time! Everything else will seem quite tame after that. πŸ˜‰

I haven’t spent all that much time there, but i have one tip if you do go. I mean, if you like walking, that is πŸ˜€ If you find a hotel near Lanc Hid (Chain Bridge), you can easily walk to a lot of sights rather than taking bus/tram, etc.

  12. So glad that things actually went well! I’d totally go nuts if my weather app wasn’t any help, especially on a trip! And Budapest sounds lovely! Ohhhh I also watched CSI wait back then and saw the cast evolve throughout the show. It was quite addictive, even will the misconceptions about crime scene analysts hahah

    1. Right? I think i stopped watching around the time when Grissom left, but now i’m determined to see the rest.
I always found it strange that they are basically scientist, but get to interrogate people. But back then i thought maybe it’s just an American thing πŸ˜€

Back in the day when CSI just came out and i was watching it all the time, my ex who was a detective, kept telling me all the time why it’s wrong, etc, so that killed it for me a bit. Now i just watch it cuz it’s fast paced, and i love Grissom πŸ˜€

  13. I’m so glad your trip went well. I went to Budapest after the Berlin Wall came down and it became my favorite city. I haven’t been there recently and is excited to hear that the city has improved. I can’t wait to return! Thanks Norrie! ❀️❀️

  14. Yay glad to hear your trip went well! I checked out the pics of Borbistro and the food looks sooo good! And I read Never Let Me Go 7 years ago for my highschool lit class and I still don’t know how I feel about it. On one hand, I like cloning stories and I like it when they’re more “realistic” than scifi. On the other hand….”depressing sort of nonsense” sums it up lol. That ending made me want to curl up and hug my dog.

    1. Ah, it was so yumm! ❀

I think my main problem with Never Let Me Go was that the narrator's style distracted me from the main issue at hand :/
