Monthly Catch Up #1 – February 2019

Hey-hey! What’s up, guys?

Well, guess what! Fool’s spring is here, and just two days ago we shed our coats when we went outside for a smoke break with my bestie at the office. Picture this. A February afternoon on the northern hemisphere; two women in skirts and sleeveless tops baking in the parking lot. Love it!

Ice coffee is also something I don’t necessarily associate with February, so the weekend walk in the park was definitely out of the ordinary.InstaSweet1550933724082.jpg

My good mood from last month is still going with full force, and top it all, I even got rid of the dude sitting next to me at work after he failed his probation. He was truly the desk mate from hell. Constant, forceful drumming of fingers, muttering, unblinking stares from close range and a torrent of Italian cursing are not something I want to put up with on a daily basis. Porca troia! Good riddance.

Thanks to my latest obsession with audio books I found a way to spend time on cooking and not lose out on any reading time either. Until now I’d happily eat three biscuits and call it dinner, just so I can sit on the sofa with my book, but considering how much I actually like nice food, and how much I hate putting on weight, I had to put an end to it.

I also discovered only just recently, that I can return any book on Audible, and get something else with my credit. Well, don’t mind if I do! Now I can spend as much time in the kitchen I want, and it’s like I’m reading and cooking at the same time.

I must say not everything turned out as I imagined. Cue mushy rice with chicken that tasted like biting into an oregano bush, but according to my dude it was the most amazing thing ever created. Go figure.

Sunshine In February – a lil’ Q&A sesh.

radiosilenceRadio Silence by Alice Oseman

What if everything you set yourself up to be was wrong?

Frances is been a study machine with one goal. Nothing will stand in her way; not friends, not a guilty secret – not even the person she is on the inside. Then Frances meets Aled, and for the first time she’s unafraid to be herself.
So when the fragile trust between them is broken, Frances is caught between who she was and who she longs to be. Now Frances knows that she has to confront her past. To confess why Carys disappeared…
Frances is going to need every bit of courage she has.
Engaging with themes of identity, diversity and the freedom to choose, Radio Silence is a tor de force by the most exciting writer of her generation.

Even though I’m not really participating in blog tours anymore, I signed up for The Fever King tour, so keep your eyes peeled, because based on what I’ve seen so far, it’s going to be a good one!

I have all kinds of ideas for cooking, and going to spend the next month experimenting. I even bought a cast iron pan, because Christina @Recipe & Read said it’s a must-have. I’m quite fond of the practice of cooking a shit ton of something and then chill for the next few days.

My hairdresser relocated to Richmond, so now I have to trek over there every other month. I’m going this Saturday and pretty much keeping my fingers and toes crossed for nice weather. I love walking near the river! But even if the weather fails me, there are always book shops.

I look forward to seeing what you guys are up to!

  1. So many great books in February. I was curious about Year One by Nora Roberts but I think I’ll give it a miss. 🙂

How inconsiderate of that hairdresser of yours to relocate. Mine changed countries and I don’t think I’ll ever forgive her for that lol. 😉 Fingers crossed the Fool’s spring continues (I’m loving it too!) and you get to enjoy some nice river walk. Richmond is so lovely!

And well done for getting that cast iron pan, I have been eyeing out one lately as well. 🙂 Looking forward to hearing about your cooking experiments, sounds like a lot of fun.

    1. Yeah, i was quite excited about Year One. Never read a Nora Roberts before but i knew she was crazy popular. I might try some of her crime books, but won’t continue this series.

OMG, well i guess i’m luckier, cuz Richmond isn’t that far. 😀 Dunno what i’d do if he left completely…

Cooking is getting more interesting! And that pan was the best investment ever! ❤

  2. Dang! You’re getting warm weather and we’re getting … more snow! I think we’re due for another 1-2 feet of the damn fluffy stuff. Wish I could be sitting out on our balcony reading in the sun. No chance here till the end of April!

And wow, that’s a lot of books read in Feb! I will manage a total of 8, which is what I read last month too. 8-10 a month is is my norm. But then, in my defence, I do have to do ALL the cooking, and cook most nights from scratch. In other words, like Christina, I love to cook because, fairs fair, I love to eat! 😀 If you need easy to follow recipes let me know.

Enjoy your walks by the river while you can, and hopefully, you might find a hairdresser that live closer to home. It took me two years to find a new one when mine left for the west coast of Canada!

    1. More snow again? 😦 Ugh. Maybe an igloo on the balcony in the meantime? 😀

Haha, i was surprised when i counted my books for the month, cuz it didn’t feel that much, but then i realized that 5 of them were audio (while cooking, or being bored at work) and the Stephen King one i started in December but only finished now.

I’m terrified of a new hairdresser, cuz had some really bad ones in the past 10 years. So now i’m just following this guy while i can 😀

      1. Ah, okay, that makes more sense if some were audio. Phew! I thought you were literally reading through the night! 😉 And yeah, I hear you about hairdressers. More than any other person, we have such an intimate relationship with these people and they had better be good, right?

Oh, now why didn’t I think of an igloo? Especially as our balcony is 19 foot across.

  3. CAST IRON SKILLETS ARE THE BEST. I love to cook beans and rice in them, or just flavored rice, or they’re perfect for making hasbrowns (my fave 😍), or veggies… I LOVE IT, OKAY.

That aside … dude, allll the books! I’m impressed that you can read that much in a month! (nearly said a day … oops 😉 ) Also, congratulations on the deskmate??? Aha ha. Ha.

    1. Oh, yumm!!! I like all kinda rice too!

I had some super uneventful days at work, so spent quite a few hours listening to audio books, so that defo helped. I didn’t realize i managed to listen to 5 books until i put the list together.

      1. Yes! You’ll definitely have to find some good recipes with the cast iron… 😛

Lol, that’s my sister. She can listen to audiobooks at work (she shelves at a library) and gets to read allllll the books

  4. Oh Heretics Anonymous sounds like such a fun read, I’m glad you enjoyed it! And very excited to hear your thoughts on The Fever King, I loved that one SO much, same goes for Radio Silence ❤
    I hope you'll have a wonderful March! ❤

    1. Fever King is pretty cool so far!
Radio Silence was nice as well, just finished the audio version. So much crying tho, and the narrator had a crying voice, so it was a bit overwhelming.
      Have a great March too!

  5. I’ve been going back and forth on Radio Silence for ages. I really didn’t like her other work but everyone seems to love this one so I look forward to hearing your thoughts! Hope you have great weather for Saturday 🙂

    1. I listened to it on audio. I found the story pretty good, and quite character focused. They cried a lot do, and the narrator was doing some crying voiced which was a bit overwhelming but not too bad. 🙈🙊

  6. Your weather is the complete opposite to the weather I’m having. Snow, snow and oh guess what, more snow. Just when we thought we’d made it through, nope we got dumped another 15-20 cm yesterday as it snowed for 12 hours straight… I’m not bitter about it or anything 😝
    I can’t wait for Spring!
You read a lot this month! Wow! I’m glad to see you enjoyed Sleeping Beauties… it’s sitting on my shelf staring at me, every day, but I’m doing my Stephen King project so I think I might wait until I’m 1000 years old to get to it, as I’m reading his books (starting from the beginning) a chapter a week… yes it’s daunting, but I’m also enjoying this pace. It makes you appreciate his work more, rather than zipping through it, you know? 🙂
Anyways, lovely wrap up! And cheers to a lovely March! 🙂

    1. Oh, it’s lucky you are ok with that snow if you are getting so much of it! I’d be all kinds if upset, haha 😄. I’m always feeling cold…
Sleeping Beauties took me two months to finish! I’m pretty much same with the other King books. Not sure why, but usually end up reading them for ages.

Hope you have a great March too!

  7. Richmond eh? You know we’re almost neighbours 😛

My hairdresser went on maternity leave last year to have twin boys and she told me she wasn’t coming back to hairstyling and I swear it took me 8 months to find someone else to cut my hair. When you find a hairdresser you like, lock them DOWN.

    1. Oh, I’m glad you managed to find one!
This guy has moved away once for about 6 months and it was too far to follow. My hair looked like a wig during that time, so I’m glad he’s not so far now 🤣

  8. Great post!

Haven’t heard of the books you mentioned, but they seem interesting. I didn’t realize Stephen King had written a new book. I actually have never read any of his books yet. Got one to recommend to start off with reading? One not too scary though, LoL.

Still deciding on my next book read. Was thinking about In a Dark, Dark Wood. I hear it’s a good one.

    1. Oooh, good question. Hmm… Non-scary, eh?
Dolores Claiborne is not scary. Not really horror either, more like psychological and suspensey a bit.
Hearts In Atlantis – it’s one my mum ended up choosing and she doesn’t like horror at all, but she loved this. Has multiple story lines and they are quite interesting, and the story telling is just beautiful.
The Mr. Mercedes Trilogy is great too. There’s only a little of the supernatural element and only toward the end. Otherwise it has good elements of detective story and private investigation + lovely characters.
      Hope this helps choosing 🙂

      1. Thanks so very much for all these great recommendations! I’ll be sure to check out these books. I totally spaced on Mr. Mercedes. I haven’t watched the series yet, but I think I might start off with that one. Thanks again =)!

  9. So lovely to hear that your good mood from last month is still going full force. The desk mate you had sounds terrible lol must be amazing now that he’s gone!

I didn’t know you could return books on audible for a new one?! What a game changer even if I never listen to them. I may start now. 😛 Hope you had nice weather in Richmond!

    1. I am so relaxed in the office even since he’s disappeared 😀

Yes, you can return if you have a monthly membership and you bought the book withing 365 days.
So far i was able to return all of them, but it’s in the description that some of the books you might not be able to return online. Haven’t happened to me yet.

  10. Oh my god im SO jealous of that beautiful “early-spring” day in february !! Seems like all we had was snow, cold, and freezing rain… YUCK! Im so tired of this mess .. 😂 Clearly born in the wrong country ahah

Erhh, that guy looked like a massive jerk and I so wouldn’t had kept my cool with someone like that.. Happy he ain’t in your paws anymore !
Ouuuh omg cooking while listening to audiobook sounds such like a good idea – though hopefully nothing would burn as your attention is on whatever you are listening to..aahah that’d be bad.

YESYES how do you like Radio Silence ?? I wanna know!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Aw, i’m sorry about the snow situation :/ Our fool’s spring is gone, and now it’s storm season, but at least no snow…

Radio Silence was pretty good actually. (I did the audio version). I think it would be better to read it as text. Cuz the characters texted a lot and it was hard to follow while only listening.

      Liked by 1 person

    1. Ha! I just finished it two days ago… it was quite surprising, and i’m still thinking about what i think, hehe 😀
It was good for sure… some bits i’m not sure i understood properly tho.

  11. What you can return books on audible and get new credits???? How didn’t I know it? And I am loving doing chores since listening to audiobooks LOL

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Yes, i discovered recently… You need to be a member with the monthly thingie, and then you can return the book if you bought it within the last 365 days. 🙂
I’m not sure if it applies to all books, but so far the ones i tried to return i could.

  12. Ha. I heard of the great weather you all had up there. It was 18 degrees here and I proudly sent a pic of my full clothesline outside to my bestie in the UK and she was like “Bless you. I´m about to get my flipflops out because it´s warm here.” Lol. So happy you had a chance to enjoy the weather.
An italian cursing desk mate from hell? Sounds like you had fun * HOWLING* I bet it´s much quieter without him now. *gg*
Cast iron pans are THE BEST! I have 2 and am in love. Makes cooking loads of fun ( as fun as cooking can be ).
Oh I read the Memory Chamber. Thought it was a decent read. Love the cover for that one a lot. Aristotle & Dante was also a good read. That one surprised me a bit. The cover for Radio Silence is awesome! How are you liking the book so far?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I’m so relaxed ever since that dude left… 😀

Radio Silence was all right! I listened to the audio, so i think that was not the best decision. The characters texted and tweeted a lot, and the way those were read out made it kinda hard to follow what is going on. The story was good tho 🙂

  13. Multitasking with audio books is the BEST! 😀 I love them for cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. It’s the only thing that makes folding/hanging laundry not feel like torture. 😛
And yay for being rid of that awful sounding co-worker. He sounds like a nightmare!
