I Heart Science Fiction – This Is My Genre #Tag

Sci-fi, the genre of what ifs, bold theories and epic journies has always fascinated me. Kaleena @Reader Voaracious now tagged me to talk about it some more.

Well, don’t mind if I do.

This tag was created by Drew @ The Tattooed Book Geek.

What is your favourite genre?

I do enjoy a wide range of books, but I always find myself drawn to speculative fiction and the many sub-genres of sci-fi.

Who is your favourite author from this genre?

John Scalzi for his dry humour, deadpan writing voice and sarcasm, followed closely by Blake Crouch who has the ability to turn me into a neurotic ball of worry.

What is it about the genre that keeps pulling you back?

The endless possibilities, the alien yet so familiar worlds, super high-tech gadgets, epic discoveries, insightful commentary on society. It never fails to amaze me.

What is the book that started your love for the genre?

I think it was actually a movie. My grandpa was a hardcore sci-fi fan, and I remember one summer evening in particular, when he was more antsy-pants than usual. That evening we watched Krull, and I was lost. That shit is epic! Even though it came out in 1983, it’s still enjoyable.

The first sci-fi book I actually remember reading, The Ring by Daniel Keys Moran, was also from my grandpa’s library. Not so long ago I managed to track down a copy and order it from the US, and now I’m just keeping my fingers and toes crossed that it’s as good as I remembered.

If you had to recommend at least one book from your favourite genre to a non-reader/someone looking to start reading that genre, what book would you choose and why?

Well, I’m glad you said “at least”… I don’t think it’s possible to find the ultimate sci-fi book that will appeal to everyone even among the science-geekily inclined, so I would definitely need to know more about the person before I opened my mouth. Two weeks ago I picked 7 books that I think are a great start. Need more inspo? How about these?

Why do you read?

Because I can?
I also find it entertaining, often eye-opening, and it certainly doesn’t hurt my vocabulary. I love how books stimulate my brain, and my imagination can run free.

I’d love to hear from Annemieke | Alexandra | Bookstooge

  1. It’s strange – although I adore watching Sci-Fi shows and films (massive Doctor Who fan), I’m yet to read much of it. Your passion for it is so admirable, though; maybe it’s something I should get into! I have Ready Player One on my bookcase, so maybe I’ll start with that! Thanks for a great post. ☺️

  2. Thanks for the tag. I’ll save it for a rainy day and use it in the next month or so. December is looking to be very busy so I suspect my review posts will be a little less than normal. So a tag post would help fill the gaps in wonderfully. Thanks! 🙂

I hope that the Ring lives up to your memories. Mentally prepare yourself though, as it might not.

  3. I’m really struggling to get into sci-fi, so I’m going to go have a look at some of your recommendations for sure! I just got given a lovely book by the author, but it’s sort of dystopian sci-fi… And I was like, ok, I recognise this is a good book. There were things I liked about it… But the genre!! I just don’t get tickled by sci-fi… I feel like I need to start again with it.

      1. Haha romance is only for when I’m feeling lazy. And I persistently avoid anything with a topless man on the cover / two people entwined in their underwear with ridiculous expressions on their faces. Because yeeeh… Not my cup of tea hahaha

  4. I know Blake Crouch has written a few novels, but I’ve only read one so far – Dark Matter. It seriously messed me up for a few weeks afterwards. 😄

  5. First up, love your answers to what is a neat # tag! And Krull, really? I would never have guessed. Those 80s SF movies were so cheesy they were compulsive viewing. 😉

Secondly, thanks for tagging me. You know, of course, which genre I’m going to be talking about? Ha! Ha! There’s a lot of us love our SF.

  6. Great post! I’ve only been into sci-fi for a couple of years and the first sci-book I loved was 2001: A Space Odyssey, it totally blew my mind.

    1. It’s nice to hear you enjoyed your first try!
I read that book about 2 weeks ago, and it really wasn’t my style of sci-fi unfortunately, but the ideas in it were quite intriguing.

  7. Lovely answers! I agree that there is something quite amazing about sci-fi, the endless possibilities and imagination of the authors never fail at impressing me. I should read more of the genre 🙂

  8. I’m actually warming up to sci-fi thanks to yours and Alex’s posts! 😊
With that said, I’ve always enjoyed watching sci-fi but haven’t read that much of it somehow. I love all those possibilities, all that fun that awaits us… I’m more drawn towards fantasy but will definitely give sci-fi a good chance in 2019. Great post! 😊

I’m same with romance. Never really been interested even though i’m sure there are some books in that genre even i would enjoy.

  10. Sci-fi is the coolest! It makes me sad that I don’t try it out as often as I’d like but it can be such a hit and miss for me, it takes a bit of courage to get me going xD I’ll try out your recs, though. Hopefully they’ll be right up my alley!

    1. I come across sci-fi every now and then i don’t enjoy. I think it’s normal.
I started recently reading samples of books i’m curious about, but not sure if i’d like it or not. It saved me from some purchases already 😀
I think most books have the first 1-2 chapters available on amazon.

  11. Krull!!! Oh my gosh that movie… so bad and yet so good lol. I always felt bad for the cyclops guy in the swamp. But the super fast (flying? it’s been a while) horses were a nice touch.

Yay for SF though! It’s my favorite too (along w/ fantasy). I read my first Scalzi last year and I agree- his humor is what made me really like the book. And every Blake crouch book I’ve read has been a trip.

  12. Loved Ready Player One. Like the movie too. Book adaptations are hard, you can’t put everything in the book in a movie. But I liked Spielberg’s work. I do read a fair amount of sci-fi but watching is just as enjoyable. You have some unknown titles listed above I’m going to check out. Thanks Norrie! ❤️❤️

  13. Okay, I need to watch Krull. I like how your grandpa influenced your love for this genre. That is really awesome. I hope the The Ring meets your expectations. Great post, Norrie.

  14. I’m buddy reading The Thousandth Floor and although it has Sci-Fi elements, it doesn’t FEEL very Sci-Fi, which is kind of cool. I love genre-crossovers. Honestly, I love Sci-Fi too, though I don’t read nearly as much of it as I should…my most recent Sci-Fi read was Wildcard by Marie Lu and I thought it was meh. Anyways, thanks for a lovely post! I really enjoyed reading it.

  15. I loved Ready Player One! Though I admit, I didn’t get over half the references. Sci-fi is such a great genre simply because of the endless possibilities and imagination involved. Great post!

  16. Thanks for this Norrie. A very, very relevant subject for me at the moment. The comments sum up perfectly my current position. I’m an avid Sci Fi fan and I’ve been trying to encourage readers at a book club I attend to take the plunge (for years). It’s finding something Sci Fi enough but not too ‘out there’. (I’m going to explore some of your suggestions). I resulted to writing my own novel in the end! The Seed of the Violet Tree (quite a soft title I thought). It’s currently out on Amazon and I’m blogging about it on my site!
