Ooops, I Dropped My Blankie In Some Dark Matter

#SciFiMonth (a.k.a. November, for the not scientifically inclined) kicked off yesterday, and we are in for a month of intergalactic war, parallel universes, alien invasions, space travel aboard a deadly virus infected spaceship, and other delightful stuff.

In case you live in a black hole, and haven’t heard of Sci-Fi Month, it’s an annual blogstravaganza that will run for the whole month. For more data on the subject teleport over to our hosts, Lisa and Imryl.

To ensure a smooth take off, I grabbed Dark Matter by Blake Crouch, and oh boy, what ride it is! Bloody stressful, that’s what. Love it though.

‘Are you happy in your life?’

Those are the last words Jason Dessen hears before the masked abductor knocks him unconscious.
Before he wakes to find himself strapped to a gurney, surrounded by strangers in hazmat suits.

Before the man he’s never met smiles down at him and says, ‘Welcome back, my friend.’
In this world he’s woken up to, Jason’s life is not the one he knows. His wife is not his wife. His son was never born. And Jason is not an ordinary college physics professor, but a celebrated genius who has achieved something remarkable. Something impossible.
Is it this world or the other that’s the dream? And even if the home he remembers is real, how can Jason possibly make it back to the family he loves? The answers lie in a journey more wondrous and horrifying than anything he could’ve imagined – one that will force him to confront the darkest parts of himself even as he battles a terrifying, seemingly unbeatable foe.

I don’t usually decide in advance what I’m going to read, but I do have a few (and by that I mean, at least thirty…) sci-fi books lying around, unread, but not forgotten, and this event is just the right kick in the butt to get on with them.

Are you joining?

    1. Hmmm… is there a specific reason why you didn’t like them? Were they all very sciency or serious?
I loved the Collapsing Empire by John Scalzi last year. It’s a space opera series, first book. Has some truly great characters, and the dry humour is right up my alley. So maybe you’d enjoy something like that?

      1. Ooh yes, I love dry humor!

So, my experience with Sci-Fi was just through Dean Koontz. I love time travel and that’s where my interest in sci-fi ends. But I still read a few of his books, until I got to 77 Shadow Street. I didn’t like that book one bit. And I stopped reading sci-fi all together. I did recently read a review copy on sci-fi in the turn of the millennium, and I loved it. 🙂

        1. Oh i see. I only read horror stuff from Dean Koontz, and one where a dude turned into some monster or other.

John Scalzi has another series called Old Man’s War. The concept is that only retired people get to be enlisted in the military in order not to waste young lives, and they get a shiny new body and all. So it’s a little bit philosophical in that sense, but also the humour is there.

  1. Oh Dark Matter sounds delicious- I love dark gripping reads, I need to check it out ASAP. And yeah, my stress levels will probably increase but it will be worth it! 😊

  2. Ooh, I see Dark Matter on bookshelves every now and again and I’ve been resisting picking it up, which was clearly a terrible error in judgement. Great TBR you’ve got going; like yours, mine is as long as my leg, and I’m still struggling to figure out what to read this month! ARCs or backlist or favourite rereads or or or… as much as I can fit in, I guess 😀

    1. I kept postponing Dark Matter for such a long time! I’m glad i finally know what all the fuss was about 😀
For now i’ll give ARCs a rest i think. Overdid it a bit during summer.

  3. I think next year I will have to do Sci-Fi month as I have found out about this too late! I need to know if there’s a calendar of themed months because if I love anything, I love a theme! I look forward to hearing about your other sci-fi offerings!
