Monthly Catch Up #10 – October 2018

Even though we are well into autumn, we had a few absolutely beautiful days here in London. You know, the kind of day that sees you sitting in your short sleeves in the garden of your favourite coffee shop, basking in the sunshine.

I’ll be the first to admit, the coffee there often taste like piss (a.k.a. under extracted, to be politically correct), but we just love the vibes and all the cute shit.

I don’t know if it was the warmth of the sun, or the buzz from the coffee, but I even managed to convince my bestie to pop into the charity bookshop with me on our way home, and it didn’t just stop there. She bought three books! Three! My heart melted on the spot.

I also did a buddy read with another friend of mine, and it was a blast. Next time Mark Edwards releases another book, we shall repeat it.

I made my favourite sausage, pumpkin and sage casserole last week, and it was just as damn delicious as I remembered. Onto the stuffed peppers and venison stew next time!

I must say, OWNtober was indeed a great inspiration, so my thanks to Kathy for coming up with this topic. I went through some books I had on my Kindle for ages. I haven’t read anything awful either, so yay for that!

Would You Rather…? The Spooky Edition, and 10 Scary Books To Spook You

Oh, That Book? No, Thank You, Or Books I’ll Probably Never Read Tag

I started Bird Box by Josh Malerman, and damn, isn’t it terrifying?! It hits all the notes for creepy, disturbing and scaretastic.

Something is out there, something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse of it, and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.

Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remains, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now that the boy and girl are four, it’s time to go, but the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat–blindfolded–with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. Something is following them all the while, but is it man, animal, or monster?

Interweaving past and present, Bird Box is a snapshot of a world unraveled that will have you racing to the final page.

The voting for the Goodreads Choice Awards is now open! Looking at all the books, I have some catching up to do.

November is sci-fi month. Yay! I had my eyes on some books for a while that will fit the topic just fine.

I look forward to seeing what you guys are up to!

Happy Halloween!

    1. Oh really? Ha! I was actually thinking along similar lines when my BF said we should move to another country. And i’m like “but what about books? And there’s no Amazon either”. (Plus i don’t speak the language… details)

  1. Now that sounds like a perfect reading month. Nice to hear that you had a chance to read your own titles and they all turned out to be great reads. Bird Box looks super creepy; I can’t wait to hear your thoughts about it. Awesome pic, I love the web around your eyes. The last sentences on your post mention eyes, seeing…mh, wonder if that was the inspiration behind the pic 

  2. Wow, you had a busy and productive month. I don’t feel like I read or reviewed that much. But I’ve certainly got a lot of great suggestions from you, this month. So now my To Buy list is fattening up for Thanksgiving November! Ha! Ha!

    Happy Halloween spider woman!

  4. Sci-fi Month coinciding with non-fit November so much fun reading ahead! Kitty is precious. Glad you had a good reading month. I really need to go through my Kindle but I have a feeling it would just make me sad 🙂

    1. I did that yesterday… What i discovered: i have some books i didn’t remember i had, and i have way less sci-fi books on kindle than i thought. I counted about 8 unread ones, but on my shelves i have over 20. (Unread, of course 😀 )

  5. Happy Halloween Norrie, hope you had lots of fun yesterday. Love your photo – so cool! Did you wear it to work? I wish my colleagues would get more into the Halloween spirit! 😀
Sounds like a great month reading-wise. I am definitely finding some reading inspiration amongst your list. 😀
And I will be checking out that casserole recipe, it will be super handy now we have colder days… yum!
And charity shops are dangerous. I went to a few in Canada and my luggage weight nearly exceeded its allowance he he. Glad your bestie ended up with some great books. 😀 xx

    1. Ha! No… my colleagues are proper party poopers, nobody did anything special :/

That casserole is soooo good. Last time i used goat milk butter and it gave it an extra flavour that was just so yumm 🙂 Hope you’ll like it too!

Whenever we are on a trip, i’m not allowed to go near book shops. Haha 😀 You got away with it, so it’s good!

      1. It´s cold up there now too? Naaw. That´s shitty. Yeah, I´ve had to sacrifice an old CD to scratch the ice from my car the other :-/
YES! We both are 🙂 . King is the only reason why I agreed to go on our first date. Our mutual love for `The Stand` was the only thing we had in common back then.

        1. Aww… but The Stand is awesome, so i get that 😀
It’s pretty cold, yes. In the morning around 1 degree, but it’s the wind that makes it worse.

You should try that recipe, it’s so good for winter / cold weather 🙂

  8. So glad OWNtober helped you out, haha! Even better you didn’t read anything awful because of it!
I started S.T.A.G.S. at the start of my holiday last week but I haven’t really made a lot of progress yet. Hoping to finish Sinner by Maggie Stiefvater first before I pick it up again. 😛

    1. Have a great November too!
Yea, it’s true about the popularity. But at the same time, if so many people likes a book, that should be a good enough indicator i think.
