Sunday Coffee & Blog Hop #5

Morning, guys! How are you doing?

I woke up at 5 a.m. today, currently having my first bucketful of coffee and am trying to make sense of the book I’m reading. The First City by Joe Hart is the final book in The Dominion Trilogy, and even though I read the previous part in June, I’m not quite sure what is happening, and who some of the people mentioned are.

Yesterday we went to an organic food festival with my besties. It was my first time visiting Battersea Park, and it was freakin’ awesome. Also, it’s now obvious that I need glasses, after my friend suggested we sit on a bench, the one with a crow, and my reaction this was “What crow?“. It was the size of fucking a cat!

We ended up staying for five hours, tried a vegan beetroot burger and didn’t hate it (in fact, I’m now a fan of carrot hummus), had a vegan orange and almond cake (self explanatory), kombucha with vodka and ginger (crazy, but yumm), gin and tonic with dill (also crazy, but even better) and just chilled on the grass, like hobos (which sounds fun in theory, but also made it obvious I’m not 21 anymore and my back feels broken now).20180909_070151.jpg

What have you guys planned for today? Want to see some cool blog posts you might have missed?

Like the discussion on Kelly’s blog about book ratings and whether two books from different genres can be compared at all. For me genre matters a lot. I like my crime thrillers as realistic as possible, while I expect sci-fi and dystopian stories to come up with some premise that is not something I’d encounter in my everyday life.

We bookworms might be perceived by our non-bookish peers as a bunch of lazy folks who do nothing but roll around in our bed and read, but they are wrong! Even if we don’t make it to the gym, or yoga class, or don’t hike miles and miles, we still have options! I personally prefer banded exercises while I’m reading (yes, doing glute bridges while reading looks a bit ridiculous, but who’s gonna judge me, my overweight cat?), and weight lifting when I’m not, you might find some other forms of exercises over at Book Beach Bunny that might fit your personal style more. I’m quite fond of the burpees, I must say.

I mercilessly DNF books I don’t like, because ain’t nobody got time for them (well, I certainly don’t), and don’t even feel half bad about it. There are just so many good books out there, that I would feel bad not reading those over something I don’t enjoy the slightest. Bookstooge listed quite a few reasons why he would drop a book. What do you think? Do you suffer through every book you pick up? Or do you move on?

Do you write negative reviews? Or are you focusing only positive things and leave the bad stuff behind? Whatever approach you choose, is your personal decision. Some people like filling their lives with positive things and don’t dwell on the negative, and some people are upset about this. Why? I have no idea. What anyone does or doesn’t do on their blog is up to them. I personally do write the occasional negative review, but quite often I would just drop a book I don’t like and then forget about it. Nandini is full of positivity and likes to focus on the good stuff. I applaud that. You do you, that’s what I always say!

Blurbs can be intriguing and make you pick up a book, but they can also be a minefield to navigate, or just simply a turn off. Zuky listed a few cliches that will make her avoid a book. For me what puts me off are spoilers in blurbs, like when they compare a book to another book and make something blatantly obvious, or phrases like “edge of the seat serial killer thriller. I mean… are we serious here or just rhyming like Dr. Seuss? Have you ever got turned off by a blurb?

I’m a shameless book hoarder, and currently own around 300 books I have not read yet. *GASP* After reading Ova’s explanation of this phenomenon, I do feel better though. Also, books are cheaper than shoes. (Note to self: need new shoes too, damn it!)

  1. Thanks for the shoutout.

And congrats on being old enough that sitting on the ground just doesn’t do it for you anymore. Mrs B and I now carry those portable, folding camp chairs in our car trunk so if we ever need them, there they are 😀

Have you tried energy drinks instead of coffee? Just wondering because a sugar free energy drink (obviously) has a lot less calories than a creamed and sugared coffee. Or are you one of those straight black coffee drinkers?

    1. Ah folding chairs!! I think it’s time i look into those 😀 😀

I don’t particularly like energy drinks because of their flavourings. I drink it occasionally though.
I drink coffee with skimmed milk and no sugar or just black. When i have instant coffee i usually go for the flavoured ones, like now i’m having one with hazelnut ❤

  2. I too mercilessly DNF books that are sucking up too much time, and will happily (as you have seen) do reviews that tell it how it is. I want to give my readers options, knowing my reviews are my opinion so they can make their own, informed decisions.

Oh, and don’t get me started on my hoard of books AND shoes. Boots, I love boots. These boots were made for walking…

    1. Oh good! Once i know i have similar taste to someone else, i usually avoid books they didn’t like 😀

I love boots too! Now that autumn is here, i’m actually quite excited to wear them again ❤ Ah, and cardigans too!

      1. Oh, I know what you mean about reviews and taste in books. You have to slowly find reviews who have similar tastes, as it makes it easier to find books you would never think of.
As a bootaholic, I love autumn, my fav season, I can wear boots every day! And I have a lot of them. Just don’t tell the other half.

        1. I came across a video on youtube the other day, and the lady was saying riding boots have gone out of fashion and noone should own any. I felt so offended! I have 2 pairs of those, and love them to bits. Have some ankle boots too but never really like them once i put them on. 😀

          1. Whaaat? Is that woman insane. She wouldn’t last a minute in the English countryside without wellies of riding boots, and the same would go here, in Canada, where boots are worn 7 months of the year! But the boots I’m in love with are the Aussie Blundstone, or Blunnies as they are called. I have three pairs! 😉

          2. I didn’t know what those aussies were so i just checked. They are kinda like chelsea boots – another style i love 😀 I need to get one this year.

  3. Lovely wrap up! And oooh that picnic sounds fun! I’ve developed a huge addiction to kombucha tea this year. I seriously can’t get enough of it! Haha

Thanks for sharing my post, love! 💗

    1. My mum used to drink that stuff. She actually had that monster thing at home and floater it in a massive 5 liter jar. Back then i didn’t even like the smell of it and found the whole process super gross.

But the ones i get from the shops bottled and flavoured are actually quite good! 🙂

    1. Ah, you and me both… the cooking i mean 😀 I haven’t felt like cooking for the past few weeks, but today i made my fave chilli and i’m super happy about it 🙂
      Have a lovely Sunday!

    1. -4? Aw, so you don’t really see at all without glasses? Me, i’m -0.75 last time they checked (5 years ago) and it’s a struggle already sometimes but i kept telling myself i’m fine and i don’t need the glasses. Until now.

I think i tried beetroot chips. But it was a mixed bag of veggie chips so don’t really remember the exact taste, but i liked it overall 🙂

  5. Oh a food festival might actually tie with a book festival or a chocolate festival for best thing ever! (I missed a chocolate festival in Vegas by one weekend once so bummed.) Thanks for the link back 🙂

  6. That picnic sounds like a lot of fun. How did you not see that huge crow though haha. You probably do need glasses, I agree 🙂 Might be long sighted or short. Thanks for sharing all these links. Hadn’t read any of these posts so heading over to the blogs now.

    1. LOL yea, can’t see in a distance.
Can’t even see the telly properly anymore. I only discovered this now, cuz i haven’t had a telly in the past 10 years. 😀

    1. It was! And now we are trying to figure out where can we get the beet burgers, but it seems like we need to find a recipe and actually make them… * shudders * 😀

  7. Great article! I’ve been pretty lucky as far as enjoying the books I’ve read in the last few years. The only book I read and never returned to cause I just wasn’t really getting into the story was The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time. I was planning on seeing the Broadway show, so I thought I read it beforehand but never finished reading it. Although, I really liked the stage play and hopefully at some point will return to reading the book.

LoL, about owning so many books. I have gotten better recently at reading what I already have before purchasing new ones. Although, next time I’m at the bookstore, I’m sure there’s going to be a new book that I just must have and then not read it for like a year. LoL.

    1. Haha… my downfall is the kindle sale. I mean, i want to read the book anyway at some point, and when it’s going for £0.99, i’m technically saving money, no? 😀

  8. He he, glad you enjoyed that festival. All those food and drink choices sound delicious. I really want to make mean raw cakes. They always taste yum and look so gorgeous yet my attempts usually don’t quite match the “it should look like this” version of those cakes. Trial and error I guess..
And lol to those glasses, I may have to join you as well… 😊

Thanks for all those blog links. They all sound super interesting, taking notes to check them out. 😊👌

    1. Ah, the last no bake cake i attempted was a cheesecake for my BF’s birthday. It was quite interesting… like nothing at all like in the video. Turned out edible, but it was looking disastrous for quite a while 😀

Good luck with the cake adventure 😀

  9. I would never write a negative review, considering how much love and effort someone puts into their work it would be cruel.
I would wow my views based in their perspective in a neutral way if I didn’t like it

  10. Love a good food festival! When I lived in California, my favorites were the Garlic Festival and the Asparagus Festival. I’ll take any excuse to put delicious food in my face. 😉

Yes, I write negative reviews, or rather, I write reviews that provide constructive criticism. Unless it’s so bad I can’t finish it, which I need to do more often. I’m terrible about DNF’ing because “all the guilt”. Working on it though.

    Fun post!

    1. A whole festival for garlic? Interesting! I’m quite curious what i would eat there. I like garlicy stuff, as long as it’s kind of a subtle flavour 😀

Once you get rid of the DNF guilt, it will be a game changer!

      1. Oh, yes. California produces more food than any other state in the U.S. Most people think of it as being very beachy, but it’s hugely agricultural (and I grew up an agricultural area). So food festivals abound. As for the Garlic Festival, you would be able to enjoy: garlic bread, garlic fries (YUMMY!), tons of things slathered in garlic butter, garlic shrimp, garlic mustards, garlic sauces, garlic stuffed olives, roasted garlic…I’m starting to feel like Forrest Gump here. 😉 Just trust me. If you like garlic, it’s awesome.

      1. Oh, no! Hopefully it isn’t too hard to make. I just went and looked and Pinterest has a bunch of varieties you can make at home. Maybe one of those will be similar to the carrot hummus you had. 🙂

  11. That Sunday of yours looks mighty inviting, I have to say! You killed me with the crow, though 😂 (for someone who is as blind as a bat, I can totally relate…)

The festival sounds like so much fun! Any event must have amazing and yummy food or I’m OUT, just so we’re clear. And this one was ABOUT food! I mean, absolute winner.

Awesome post, Norrie 🙂 Hope your week’s going great so far, too!
