Monthly Catch Up #6 – June 2018

Summer has officially began, and even though I still had to wear a jacket or cardigan of some sort at least half the month, there were some days on which my legs finally saw the light of day too.

At the beginning of the month I had my annual birthday trip, and this year I went to Brussels and Gent. It was awesome!

My new special skill: making beer drinking look creepy! Practice, guys, practice! It’s a life skill!

The bed & breakfast where we stayed was the cutest thing ever. The room was above a soap shop, and even had a reading nook! Fine, well, it was hot as fuck too, and had not a single moment of peace, so I basically haven’t slept for three days… For brekkie they served a basket full of pastries every day, so by the third day I could not even button up my jeans over my food baby, and walked around in a jumpsuit, a.k.a. onsie. Brilliant. Not.

Since this state of being and my general laziness was getting unbearable, I returned to gym in the middle of June, and I’m very determined to get back to my original shape. My reading of course went downhill immediately. I just can’t seem to find the balance anymore. It actually bothers me a lot.

So let’s see what happened in June on Reading Under the Blankie, shall we.

I finally got on with The Dominion Trilogy I started in 2016, and read the sequel during my holiday. I must say, in the beginning I had no clue what was going on, but there were quite a few reminders early on, so it all turned out just fine.

I tried an audio book, and I actually loved it. My first encounter with this format was two years ago, when I tried to listen to a Stephen King book, and failed miserably. The narrator got on my nerves with his weird punctuation, and there were so many story lines and characters that I couldn’t follow the plot, even though I actually read the book in the past already. Girlhood on the other hand was a much simpler story, with only a handful of characters, and it also helped me go to sleep. No, not because it was boring… I had a really hard time falling asleep in the noisy B&B, and listening to this book actually helped distract me somewhat.

A Thousand Perfect Notes by C.G. Drews
A book filled with Chopin, emotions and pain.

Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan
Where cyberpunk meets hard-boiled detective story.

Social Creature by Tara Isabella Burton
An intoxicating, whirlwind friendship; Social Creature is a haunting story of Louise and Lavinia, two women playing a dangerous game.

Love Will Tear Us Apart by Holly Seddon
An intimate account of an unconventional marriage.

No Reception by Maisie Porter
The story of two women out for revenge.

The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith / J.K. Rowling
An elegantly written, classic detective story set in London.

The Woman In the Window by A.J. Finn
Just like a Hitchcock movie.

Last Time I Lied by Riley Sager

Two Truths and a Lie. The girls played it all the time in their tiny cabin at Camp Nightingale. Vivian, Natalie, Allison, and first-time camper Emma Davis, the youngest of the group. The games ended when Emma sleepily watched the others sneak out of the cabin in the dead of night. The last she–or anyone–saw of them was Vivian closing the cabin door behind her, hushing Emma with a finger pressed to her lips.

Now a rising star in the New York art scene, Emma turns her past into paintings–massive canvases filled with dark leaves and gnarled branches that cover ghostly shapes in white dresses. The paintings catch the attention of Francesca Harris-White, the socialite and wealthy owner of Camp Nightingale. When Francesca implores her to return to the newly reopened camp as a painting instructor, Emma sees an opportunity to try to find out what really happened to her friends.

Last month was all about getting ready for summer!

Ready For The Beach? These 16 Books Will Put You In Summer Mood

10 Books That Will Make You Want To Travel

What say ‘summer’ more than a burst of pinks and candy colours? This book haul was an absolute eye popper, or we could say, Pink As The Bing On Your Cherry.

I found a summer road trip readathon on Megan & Crystal’s blog, and it’s so freakin’ awesome, I just want to jump right into it. It requires some planning though which almost sounds like a set to-be-read list, and the mood reader in me is of course fretting over this, so we’ll see how it goes.

I’m going to Malaga in the middle of July, and I need to be prepared. My Kindle is filled with tons of books to pick from, I bought a cute beach towel with fruits on it, three sets of bikinis and some sun dresses. Now I just need to make sure I can actually fit in those things, so going to have to lay off the cheesecake, easy off the ice cream, and actually stick to the gym. #nopressure

I look forward to seeing what you guys are up to!

  1. What do you do at the gym? I tended to use the treadmill a lot, so I just brought along a tablet and would read the entire time. That obviously wouldn’t work if you’re going through various machines, but maybe audio would work, which should help get your numbers back up to where you want them to be.

    1. I mainly do weights. Either the free weights or the machines.
Actually tried audio book, but i noticed i have to treat it like i would the normal book and not do anything while i’m listening, otherwise i won’t know what’s going on 😀

For now i’m just trying to be more efficient and be done with gym in 40 minutes tops.

  2. Ahhh good luck for your trip! That sounds tons of fun! But totally relate to trying to balance reading + doing aaall the things. 🙈I tend to exercise and listen to audiobooks which is helpful, but ugh bad narrators are the WORST and can totally ruin a good book!! I hope you find more good audios that you like. 😊

    1. Oh yes, i didn’t even think about that before, now i’m listening to samples first. Sometimes just the voice of the person can be very irritating in the long term.

This might change with time, once i’m used to audio, but for now i have to treat them like normal books and not do anything while i’m listening, otherwise i can’t pay attention. :s

  3. Wow, that was a busy month for reading and you managed to squeeze in some travel. And more again for July too. Have fun at the beach, and I’m looking forward to your next review. Now I really must try some audio books.

    1. ❤ Thank you!

I highly recommend trying the samples for as many books as you can. I didn't realise this first time around and the narrator really just ruined everything for me.

  5. Happy Belated Birthday, Norrie! What a month you’ve had! Finding that balance is always so hard, but you will. I am trying to cut back from something to find a balance for me, too. Something has to give – a little! I loved hearing what you have been up to, and from Brussels to Malaga- one of many joys of living where you do that you can travel to see these lovely places. I’ve not been to Brussels, but I’ve been Barcelona in Spain. Would love to see Malaga. Happy travels to you, lots of workouts, and happy reading, too! ♥️

    1. Thank you 🤗

Barcelona is lovely! Went there about 8 years ago. Didn’t have a great experience because of my traveling companion, so I’m planning to see it again at some point in the future.

Malaga is great for a relaxing beach holiday and it’s quite cheap, compared to Barcelona for example.

  6. If you’re interested in reading with us for the readathon, I just searched Goodreads by state or country and then picked a book I would like. You could easily make it into a mood reader challenge with the variety of books I found 🙂 The books you read look amazing! I’ve added a few more to my TBR.

  7. I tried the gym once for a couple of weeks but didn’t like it. And now I stay away 😀 I DO go swimming though when I feel like I have to do some sports. And working in the garden is my way of staying fit haha

I hope you have a lovely time in Malaga!

    1. Swimming is great!
I should do that too, for my backpain. Swimming pool water doesn’t agree with my skin, and finding a nice one around here is difficult tho. I used to swim when i was a kid, and we lived next to a small river.

Gardening does sound more fun than gym 😁

  8. Your trip to Malaga sounds great. Have a great time. 😊☀️ And good luck with the gym thing 💪 I still think you read a lot. 📚 😁👌

PS. Can you believe this amazing weather? I was telling my bf yesterday that English summer is usually a week long.. what’s going on? ☀️☀️☀️ Loving every minute of it. 😊💕

  9. I have the easiest time listening to audio when I’m walking- which I haven’t been doing a lot of in this heat sadly. Malaga sounds like it will be a blast! I hope it’s a great month for you 🙂

  10. So excited to see Last Time I Lied here. I am about to pick that up because I am taking part in the blog tour. I have been slacking recently with my reading. I really hope it picks up because I have a lot of books I am excited to read.

  11. Audiobooks are a bit of hit and miss for me as well. Some of them have the perfect narrators and others are like, “Um yeah, I imagined this character’s voice a lot deeper and *without* a Scottish accent.” 😛 And I’m also planning on picking up Last Time I Lied in the next couple of days–super excited!

    1. Hahahaha 😀
That scottish accent! I love it, but sometimes it’s hard to understand some words. Like in Girlhood i was convinced one of the girls is called Emma. But then i saw some reviews and they referred to her as Ama. 😀 I wonder what else i didn’t get right.

I’m almost done with Last Time I Lied, and damn, it’s just getting better and better

Oh, wow. That bed and breakfast you stayed at sounds heavenly (minus it being so hot and busy!) 🙂
Ugh, I feel ya on trying to find that balance in life. There's just never enough time in the day to get everything you want to do done. It drives me nuts, too.
