Monthly Catch Up #3 – March 2018

March, the arrival of Spring was a sore disappointment. Snow, serious ass-freezing and general misery were the theme of the month. My insomnia reached some new levels, and it sucked. Oddly enough my doctor suggested I should read more to help my mind switch off. I’m with you, dude… That said, she also recommended listening to BBC Radio 4, because apparently it’s super boring and should help with my nightly troubles. Love science…

So let’s see what happened in March on Reading Under the Blankie, shall we.

I read some pretty great books this month, and I’m happy to report I haven’t particularly disliked any of my choices. One of them was fucking weird though. Wanna guess which one? Looking through the list, it seems I went pretty heavy on thrillers and suspense shit, so maybe it’s time to lighten up the mood a bit next month… As if. I finally managed to read Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I mean, it’s only been sitting on my Kindle for the past four years…

In case you missed these, or haven’t felt like reading them at the time, but now you are dying to know what I thought, here’s a collection of my reviews from the past month. I have also included reviews of some books I read a while ago, in the pre-blog era, but I love them to bits, and just felt the need to share them. (Cuz I can…)

The Hunger by Alma Katsu
The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena
Tangerine by Christine Mangan
Hekla’s Children by James Brogden
Midwinter Sacrifice by Mons Kallentoft
The Night Stalker by Robert Bryndza
The Fear by C.L. Taylor
Let Me Lie by Clare Mackintosh
Summer Death by Mons Kallentoft

I’ve been reading The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams for about two weeks now. I quite enjoy it, and the characters are great, so not exactly sure why I’ve been at it for such a long time. Just not feelin’ it… Don’t want to give up though. Weird.

I also picked up The Woman Before Me by Ruth Dugdall, because I just can’t stay away from creepy and suspenseful shit for the life of me.

I’ve read one book specifically for the Popsugar Reading Challenge. The topic was female authors who published a book under a male pseudonym. I picked J.K. Rowling. For some other suggestions you can check out my reading list.

Fans of Nordic noir and classic dystopia probably enjoyed my lists this month. But even if you have never read anything from either of this genre, you might find something that tickles your fancy.

Even though I’m a serious mood reader, and never have a set TBR for a month, I’m participating in ApTHRILL next month. ApTHRILL is the brain child of Kathy, the lovely lady with the all the books and the munchies. Head over to her blog for more details.
I have some non-bookish ambitions as well. Shocking, I know. I started learning Greek last week, and want to spend at least 15 minutes each day honing my skill. It’s brutal and painful, let me tell you that much. Do you also love pain? Maybe try Greek. It’s great!
I’m doing a secret gin run with my bestie next weekend. I’m not sure why it’s all so secret, I mean, it was all over Facebook?!?! I can’t run for the life of me, and yet I signed up to do 10k. I can drink all the gin though, so I guess I’ll be fine.
I’m planning to stick to the night time routine my doctor imposed on me, and hopefully I’ll manage to catch some more sleep and will be able to return to the gym. Nowadays I go maybe once a week on average, and it’s only enough to put me in physical pain for days, and see no improvement whatsoever. Sounds lovely, isn’t it?

I look forward to seeing what you guys are up to!

  1. Yay for you joining ApTHRILL!
And a big boo on the insomnia and everything else going on. It sucks big time. I’ve never struggled with insomnia but there was a period of time where I only slept two hours at a time, woke up, fell asleep again and repeat. Thàt was hard so I can’t even imagine how hard it must be for you!

Good luck on your Greek, and the gin run. [Simply drink plenty of gin and you won’t even notice how slowly time goes because yay gin, right?]

  2. Oh no, insomnia sucks. I suffer from it too now and again and it’s so frustrating when it decides to come for a visit. Like an unwelcome guest. Hope you feel better soon, I sometimes fall asleep during podcasts… as long as the voices are soothing. But overall, not much really helps in my case. 😢 Big big hugs.
By the way I have been reading Ninth Rain since February. 🙈 Absolutely no idea why. It’s well written, I like the feminist punch… but it’s long and I tend to get distracted by other books. Good luck! 🍀
What did you think of Daughter of Smoke and Bone?

    1. Do you have a plan what you are going to read? Or are you a mood reader?
I don’t normally make a list, but this challenge seems all right, i’d be reading thrillers anyway 😀

Sometimes, even if i decide to pick up a certain book after finishing the current read, i don’t feel like it anymore by the time comes 😀
We’ll see how i’m getting on with apthrill… i might be a nervous wreck by the end of the month 😀

  6. Insomniac here…. I battle to fall asleep but the books help.
I sigh, I have a list of books to get through, a bit of a mission with a full time job….
May have to take a day’s leave to snuggle in with my book 🙂
